Most of the safety problems we find are fixed before the road is built.

Every audit records the risks we raise and how the designer responds. Across 234 audits, this is what that record shows.

Risk level

One in nine problems is rated high risk.

Ratings recorded by the audit team. 2,117 problems in total.

Who is at risk

Over 40% of problems put people walking or cycling at risk.

A problem can affect more than one group.

Where problems are found

Crossings and footways come up most after signs and markings.

Most common assets with a safety problem.

Crash types

72% of problems point to the crash types most likely to kill or seriously injure.

iRAP treatments

Three in four high-risk problems get a fix iRAP rates at 25% fewer serious casualties or more.

What an audit finds

Three examples from recent audits, described without client or project details.

Drivers still acceleratingat the crossing Crossing moved, speed humps added
As designed

Design stage · High risk

A bus station crossing, Abu Dhabi

What we found
The pedestrian crossing sat immediately after a roundabout exit, where drivers are still accelerating.
What changed
The designer moved the crossing further along the road and added speed humps on the approach.
Who it protects
Bus passengers and pedestrians
No crossing:people walk betweenqueuing traffic Raised crossing added, which also slows exitingvehicles
As designed

Design stage · High risk

A new roundabout on a border road, Sharjah

What we found
One arm of the roundabout had no crossing, leaving people to walk between queuing and exiting traffic.
What changed
A raised pedestrian crossing was added, which also slows vehicles leaving the roundabout.
Who it protects
Pedestrians and drivers
Exposed joints, poor lapping:the barrier is weaker in a crash Rectified before opening:continuous, properly lapped barrier
As found on site

Pre-opening · High risk

A farm access junction on an expressway, Abu Dhabi

What we found
An old, untested safety barrier had been removed and reinstalled with exposed joints, weakening it in a crash.
What changed
The contractor confirmed the barrier issues were rectified before the road opened.
Who it protects
Drivers and cyclists
How these figures are produced

Problems, risk ratings, assets and road users come from our road safety audit reports and the designer feedback trackers. Acceptance is the share of clear accept or decline replies, from the designer feedback trackers we have reviewed. The 960+ figure counts design-stage problems where the designer confirmed the drawings were revised. Crash types are taken from the crash risk each problem describes. iRAP bands come from matching each recommendation to a treatment in the iRAP Road Safety Toolkit and show the potential casualty reduction the Toolkit states for that treatment; they are not measured results at our sites. Figures are updated as new audits close.
